Where are herdy®sleep mattresses made?
All herdy®sleep mattresses start life in the Lake District but are handmade in Yorkshire by our expert mattress makers who have over 100 years’ experience of crafting mattresses. They even design and make our bouncy herdy®sleep pocket springs and weave the unique chemical-free sleeping fabric all onsite in their workshop.
Tell me more about what’s inside my herdy®sleep mattress!
At herdy®sleep we care about the detail, and we’re passionate about making things by hand right here in Britain, using as many British-born materials and British-nurtured skills as we can. As herdy®sleep began in the Lake District and wool makes for an excellent mattress filling, responsibly sourcing fleece from friendly local Herdwick sheep was the obvious choice. One entire woolly fleece goes into every herdy®sleep mattress, so each night, as you doze off, you can count the sheep, and the farmers, that you’ve helped support. With all our natural materials in place, including the finest cashmere and cotton, we turned to our Yorkshire based expert mattress makers to handcraft a superior mattress that’s traditionally stitched, tufted, and bursting with over 6,000* bouncy herdy®sleep pocket springs.

Why is a herdy®sleep mattress so unique?
A herdy®sleep mattress is the first traditionally constructed mattress that can be rolled up and put in a box. This is certainly not a zipped mattress cover over the top of a slab of foam. Instead, it is side-stitched, tape-edged and tufted by hand with artisan techniques that dates back over a hundred years – the very best way to construct a high quality mattress. We’ve even added handles to the border too so that it is easy to rotate and maintain your mattress. The fabric on the mattress sleep surface is woven on our own looms and we’ve developed a special inherently fire-retardant fabric that means we don’t need to use any chemicals on the sleeping surface so the fabric is completely natural and chemical-free! Just below the chemical-free sleeping surface, we’ve layered a 100% natural blend of Herdwick wool, cool cotton and luxurious cashmere for added sumptuousness but of course, the main reason being that it is better to sleep naturally. Temperature regulating properties of natural fillings draw moisture away from the body while you sleep, helping to keep a consistent sleeping temperature, unlike foam which can make you sweat a lot. The natural fillings in a herdy®sleep pocket spring mattress are supported by over 6000 tiny herdy®sleep pocket springs which help to distribute your body weight evenly and reduce pressure points, all helping to ensure you wake up with a smile!
Why do you only sell one mattress?
We’ve spent many months developing the herdy®sleep mattress with our trusted mattress maker who has been crafting mattresses for over 100 years. They know a thing or two about making mattresses so you can rest assured knowing you’re buying a really top notch product. With over 6000 tiny herdy®sleep pocket springs, the mattress will mould to your individual sleeping profile and provide you with the correct level of support for your body.
Of course, don’t forget we offer a 100 night sleep trial so if you are not 100% satisfied with your herdy®sleep mattress, you can return it free of charge.
What’s the firmness of the mattress?
The herdy®sleep mattress is a medium feeling mattress. We’ve based the feel on a luxury hotel mattress, because most hotels choose a mattress that suits most people – it’s not too firm but is also sumptuous. Our trusted mattress maker has over 100 years’ experience crafting quality mattresses and inclusion of herdy®sleep pocket springs and sumptuous natural fillings means this is the best bed in a box mattress money can buy!
What is our 100 night sleep trial?
Let’s be honest, you can’t really know for sure if a mattress is absolutely right for you after just a few sleeps. It’s a big investment and we want you to be 100% satisfied that you’ve made the right choice. So, sleep on it, sleep some more, and sleep again. If after 100 nights you’re unconvinced, we’ll send a courier to collect your herdy®sleep mattress free of charge and refund you in full. All we ask is that you give your mattress a chance for at least 30 nights, because if you’ve been sleeping on your previous mattress for the last 10 years it always takes a little time to get used to something new. If you’re still not sure, just contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a pickup that’s at a time convenient to yourself.
Our mattress maker really is one of the best bed makers in the world, so we’re confident you’ll wake up with a smile.

What are the sizes and weights of each herdy®sleep mattress?
Each box (51cmx51cmx106cm) weighs approximately 4kg and then the sizes and weights of each of our standard size mattresses are as follows:
Single (90cmx190cm) 25kg
Small Double (120 x 190cm) 34kg
Double (135cmx190cm) 38kg
Kingsize (150cmx198cm) 43kg
Super kingsize (180cmx198cm) 50kg
Please be aware, as each herdy®sleep mattress is handmade, there may be a slight size variation of +/- 2cm.
Although our mattresses come in a box for convenience, we’d always recommend finding a friend to help you position and unpack your mattress.
Can I order a different sized mattress to the standard sizes?
Of course, because our mattresses are handmade to order, we can also offer a bespoke size service of up to 200cm x 200cm. If you would like to order a custom size mattress to your specific dimensions, you can select custom size on the buy now page or alternatively call us on 0800 294 8666 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) or email us: email@example.com. Please note, it may take up to 15 working days for a bespoke size mattresses to be delivered and it won’t be covered by our 100 night return policy.
What is the maximum weight recommended for a herdy®sleep mattress?
A herdy®sleep mattress is suitable for people of up to 19 stone (120kg).
How big is the box?
All standard size herdy®sleep mattresses are delivered to your door in a box. The box measures 51cm x 51cm x 106cm, no matter which size mattress you choose. Once the quality control checks at our workshop are complete, the mattresses are compressed, rolled onsite and packaged neatly into a box to be delivered by courier directly to your door. The herdy®sleep pocket springs bounce perfectly back to life as soon as you unroll your mattress in your bedroom and they help to ensure the lovely Herdwick wool, cotton and cashmere blend pushes back into position to form a perfectly natural sleeping surface. You can leave your mattress boxed for up to 3 months, but we recommend opening as soon as you have the opportunity to get it positioned in your bedroom. Once unboxed, we recommend you leave your mattress for 24 hours for its natural fillings to recover back into place, so try to resist the temptation to jump straight into bed.

Will a courier deliver if I am not at home?
The courier will require a signature so someone will need to be at home to sign for the delivery.
Do I need to turn or rotate my herdy®sleep mattress?
A herdy®sleep mattress has been perfectly designed, layered with bouncy herdy®sleep pocket springs and resilient Herdwick wool, so it doesn’t need to be flipped. However, we do suggest that you rotate your mattress to help the fillings settle evenly. For your added convenience, mattress handles are sewn to the border to assist you when rotating.
For the first three months, try to rotate once a month, and after that, twice a year should do the trick. We tend to remember when the clocks go forward and back.
Will my herdy®sleep mattress smell?
Just like with any new product, don’t panic if you detect a slight odour when opening the box. It’s completely normal with natural fibre mattresses and will fade away in no time at all.
What type of bed base can I use with my herdy®sleep mattress?
Just like you, your mattress wants to lie down somewhere comfortable and deserves a good quality bed base. If your bed slats are weakened or your frame has seen better days, it can compromise the support of your herdy®sleep mattress. Therefore, treat it well, and in return it will reward you with a good night’s sleep so that you can take on the world.
Tip: if you are using a slatted base, make sure the slats are no more than 75mm apart to support your mattress properly.
How deep is the mattress – will standard sheets fit?
A herdy®sleep mattress is all about being convenient for you and so although it’s packed with a full Herdwick fleece and over 6,000 individual herdy®sleep pocket springs it is just 26cm deep so standard sheets should fit just fine.
Would you recommend a mattress protector?
A mattress protector is a worthy investment - it provides your mattress with an extra layer of protection to ensure it stays spick and span. Always opt for a mattress protector with natural fillings so your bed can breathe.
How do I clean my herdy®sleep mattress?
Even with a mattress protector and sheet in place, dust and fluff will always find a way into your bed, so every few months, grab yourself a brush and sweep it all away. Steer clear of using a vacuum as it dislodges the natural fillings. If there are any accidental spillages on your mattress, just dab them with a dry cloth. If you need something a little more thorough, use mild soapy water and let it air dry fully before you remake your bed.
Can I use an electric blanket with a herdy®sleep mattress?
Of course you can, however, a herdy®sleep mattress has a wonderful natural sleeping surface which will help to regulate your body temperature and using an electric blanket means that you are unlikely to feel this benefit when the electric blanket covers this surface.
Do herdy®sleep mattresses pass all of the safety standards?
All of our mattresses have been rigorously tested both in-house by our expert mattress maker and by the UK mattress regulatory body to pass UK fire regulations, which are the strictest in Europe. Of course they are also a National Bed Federation (NBF) approved member, having been approved by the NBF’s strict code of practice ensuring processes and procedures are in place for supply chain scrutiny and compliance with regulatory requirements, including flammability, cleanliness of fillings and trade descriptions. Our mattress makers were even presented the Bed Manufacturer of the Year Award 2015/2016 by the NBF, so we really are working with the very best.
All foam in the manufacture of our mattresses are CFC free and all components comply with UK fire regulations BS7177 Low hazard for domestic use - the most stringent in the industry
