mattress sizes: your questions answered

Your bed is the focal point of your room, so it’s important to choose the right one. The first stage in this decision process, of course, is determining what size you need. Once you know this, you can research the styles available to you. Next up is choosing the right mattress to provide you with a good night’s sleep. Anybody who’s ‘Googled’ mattress or bed sizes will know there’s a lot of conflicting information, and the nature of the internet means that non-UK sizes often get scooped up into our search results, putting us at risk of a disappointing and potentially impossible delivery! To help clear up any confusion, we’ve put together a helpful guide to bed sizes.

Although most of the beds we’d buy are standard UK sizes, it’s not unusual for us to buy one from a foreign company trading in the UK. This can make it tricky to source a mattress to fit the bed, but don’t worry – we can create a bespoke herdysleep mattress to fit your requirements.

What Size Bed and Mattress Should I Buy?

The first consideration is the size of your bedroom. If you don’t have lots of space in your main bedroom, then consider reserving this room for sleeping and use another room for storing clothes.

The second is your sleeping style. If you’re a chronic star-fisher then perhaps you should opt for a super king so you and your partner can sleep comfortably. Whereas if you’re single, or you and your partner sleep particularly closely, then a small double could be perfect. For children, a single bed allows for a comfortable sleep that can provide support into teenage years.

How Thick Should my Mattress Be?

The depth of a mattress depends on its construction and filling. The herdysleep mattress is 26cm deep, but others may vary. Mattress thickness doesn’t necessarily correlate to the comfort of your sleep, so it’s important to try a mattress out before you decide it’s definitely the right one for you. That’s why at herdysleep we offer a 100-night trial, so you can make sure that your mattress suits your needs.

How Many Springs Should My Mattress Have?

We’ve talked about springs on the blog before, but more springs means more support and a comfier mattress overall. Usually this also corresponds with price– the bigger your budget, the more springs you’ll get.

How Does It Fit in the Box?

At herdysleep, we use a box that measures 51cm by 51cm by 106cm. All of our mattresses fit in the box, regardless of the size you order. They’re compressed, rolled and packaged in our factory and, once delivered and unpacked, the mattress bounces back as if it had never been packaged. After 24 hours, your mattress will be ready for sleeping on.

Can I Order Custom Sizes?

Not all mattress manufacturers make their mattresses to order, but because we do, we can create custom sizes of up to 200cm x 200cm. So, if you’ve got a small or unusually shaped room (or you just want the biggest bed possible), then you can still find the right mattress for you.
