10 woolly workshops to learn a new craft

At herdysleep we certainly know a thing or two about the versatility of wool. We have a lot to thank our lovely Herdwick sheep for when it comes to providing the sumptuous fillings for our mattresses, but we also love to get involved in making a woolly crafty creation now and again too! If you fancy learning a new craft or finding your next hobby, we’ve rounded up a fabulous selection of workshops and classes from across the country to make it easier than ever for you to get started.

Knitting

Chunky Knit and York’s Medieval Wool Trade Heritage Workshop, York

About the course

This six hour workshop is run by Duttons for Buttons, and will teach you how to knit your own personalised scarf, tassels and pom poms while learning about the rich history of York’s medieval wool trade. The jam-packed course will see you master a number of knitting skills, including how to cast on, cast off, knit, purl, rib, stocking stitch, garter stitch, moss stitch and cable stitch.

Hello Crafter Arm-Knitting Workshop, Saltaire

About the course

During this two hour course, held from 7-9pm, beginners and experienced knitters alike will have the opportunity to get involved in the craft of arm-knitting. The workshop will teach you how to make your very own chunky throw using just a ball of super-sized yarn and your arms!

What’s included?

A 2kg ball of mammoth yarn in a colour of your choice will be provided, along with tea, coffee and biscuits.

Crochet

Beginners Crochet with Myra Mckay, Lancashire

About the course

This five week course is led by Knitwise instructor Myra Mckay, and includes a weekly 2 hour lesson from 7-9pm, during which complete beginners will see their crochet skills flourish as they learn how to chain, double and treble. This course is a great way for beginners to explore crochet and become confident in working from charts and written instructions.

What’s included?

All materials including a 4mm crochet hook and yarn are provided, as well as refreshments.

Hooky Buddies, Beginner’s Crochet Workshop for Modern Makers, Wolverhampton

About the course

This two week workshop will see beginners learn the basic skills of crochet and how to create a granny square over two sessions. Small class sizes allow everyone to have individual support in building a strong foundation in crochet.

What’s included?

A take home pack will be provided to support your journey after the session, homework task and follow up video support as well as access to Hooky Buddies Facebook Group to be part of the online community. Refreshments will also be provided.

Felting

All Things Felt and Beautiful, Nature in Needle Felt Workshop, Gloucestershire

About the course

Anyone is welcome to join this course, including beginners, where you will master the basic skills of needle felting to create your own beautiful and realistic designs. Draw or trace your chosen image to fabric, then add in some needle felted colour to bring your image to life!

What’s included?

All the necessary materials are provided to create your needle felted image, including a 7 inch hoop frame. All you need to bring along is your chosen image!

Felt Pictures, Drawing and Painting with Wool Workshop, Northumberland

About the course

This one day workshop will provide an introduction to wet felting techniques, including how to add texture and depth to your pictures using wool, before incorporating needle felting skills for finer detail. No experience is required to get involved and create your own beautifully felted designs.

What’s included?

All materials and equipment are provided, including a homemade lunch, though you are advised to bring a towel.

Spinning

From Fleece to Fibre, Hand Spinning Workshop, Cumbria

About the course

This Lake District based course is held over a weekend and will teach you about fleece selection, purchase and preparation, before learning how to card on a drum carder, start to spin on drop spindle and work your way to setting up a wheel and learning the principles of tension. You will turn your prepared batts into spun singles and understand plying to create and finish your own skein of hand spun fibre.

What’s included?

Use of all equipment, a selection of fibres, follow up support including occasional workshops, as well as lunch are all included in this workshop.

Beginning Spinning Workshop, York

About the course

This full day course runs from 9:30am-4pm and will introduce beginners to the skilled craft of spinning. The course covers how to set up and maintain wheels, the structure and preparation of fibres, spinning and plying, and by the end of the session you will have spun your very own skein of yarn!

Welcome drinks and biscuits along with a selection of fibres are provided. After the course, spinning wheels are available for hire.

Love Your Loom, Tapestry Weaving Course, Devon

About the course

This one day course, located in the East Devon countryside, will allow you to create your very own hand crafted wall hanging through learning the skill of tapestry weaving. The course is suitable for beginners and will cover a variety of tapestry weaving techniques on a standing frame loom, including tabby, pick and pick, hatching, rya knots, soumak, shapes, colour blending and outlining.

Use of the looms for the day, all yarn and equipment, tea, coffee, refreshments and a light lunch are included.

Weave a Scarf Workshop, Merseyside

About the course

Through this one day workshop you will be introduced to the craft of weaving on a Sample It or Rigid Heddle loom. Anyone is welcome to attend, with even beginners offered individual guidance to create a beautiful hand woven scarf to take home after the session.

What’s included?

Use of the looms and materials will be provided, but you may also bring any additional yarn or ribbons you wish to incorporate into your scarf.
